TFP Modelling Explained: A Beginner’s Guide

What TFP means, when a collaboration can help your portfolio and what models and photographers should agree before a shoot.

TFP modelling - Models House Academy

TFP usually means a collaborative shoot where participants exchange their time for agreed images rather than a normal modelling fee. It can help new models and photographers develop portfolios, but “free” should never mean vague.

When TFP makes sense

A collaboration is useful when the concept adds something genuinely missing from your portfolio and the team can produce work at an appropriate standard.

Agree the basics in writing

Confirm the concept, date, location, team, approximate duration, wardrobe, number or type of edited images, delivery expectations and intended usage before the shoot.

Check the people involved

Review portfolios and professional presence. For unfamiliar collaborators, verify identities and discuss the location. Younger models should have a parent or guardian appropriately involved.

Usage is important

Portfolio collaboration and commercial advertising are not the same thing. Make sure everyone understands whether images are for portfolios/social media or broader promotional/commercial use.

Know when to say no

A TFP shoot is not automatically valuable because someone owns a camera. Choose collaborations strategically and never accept pressure to cross boundaries for the promise of exposure.
